Last Short Track Race: The Short track race this week could be the turning
point in the battle for the 2002 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series
Championship, and Robert Pressley's No. 18 Dickies Square D Team is posed
and ready for the challenge.
Pressley enters the South Boston Speedway race knowing that he has gone to
victory lane in a NASCAR Goodys Dash car at the speedway in 1989, and
competed in several NASCAR Busch Series events at the facility.
"I've raced at South Boston a few times and never really had a good finish
in a Busch Series car, but I did win a Goodys Dash race at the track," said
Pressley. "It's just a short track that lends itself to crashing and hard
feelings. I love that style of racing, but it does put you in the hot seat
with the points race that we have going on. For us, we know we can climb to
second in points or we can fall to eight in just one race. So we have to be
aggressive, but careful."
After the seventh place finish last weekend at Texas Motor Speedway,
Pressley and the No. 18 Dickies Square D Dodge Team pulled to within 139
points of the points leader Mike Bliss. In fact, the top eight drivers in
the points standings are separated by a mere 199 points.
"I don't know; it's been a long year of things happening to us," said
Pressley. "We've had a solid year, but we've been a little inconsistent
with our finishes. I think we still have a shot at the title, but time is
not on our side. Mike (Bliss) looks to be the man to beat right now but
that can change pretty quickly at a place like South Boston."
At the previous four short track races this season, Pressley has recorded
one top five finish and had trouble at each of the other events.
"We've had a tough time at the short tracks this season," said Pressley.
"We've run good but we get in someone else's accident like Richmond two
weeks ago, or Martinsville earlier this season."
Past History: Last year, Joe Ruttman drove the No. 18 truck to a fifth
place finish after starting from the 10th place. Last season was the first
race for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series at South Boston Speedway.
Championship Hunt: With five races remaining in the 2002 season, there are
still 15 teams that can win the Truck Series Championship.
This Week's Truck: Pressley will be racing the same truck, "Chunky" that he
ran last week at Texas Motor Speedway and finished seventh.
