Kip McCord started his racing career in the early 1980’s with driver and friend Mike Alexander. The duo grew up together in high school and would go to the race track after school everyday. Sometimes they raced together and other times they were competitors. As the years went by they stayed in touch until McCord was asked to change tires full time.

“Some of the guys on Mike’s team nominated me to be a tire changer,” McCord said. “So I went out there and practiced a little bit, then I caught the buzz and was ruined. My life in racing began full time.

In 1989, after the Alexander team closed shop, McCord found himself on a newly organized Filmar Racing Team….with Bobby Hamilton. This same team brought both men their first Busch Series win.

“When Bobby left in 1990, they hired David Green for the 1991 and 1992 seasons,” McCord remembers. “It was our first race together and we won the pole. That is one of the things that means to me than anything in racing. David and I both put a lot a sweat into that car.”

While McCord stayed on the team, other drivers came and went (Jeff Burton and Kenny Wallace drove until Filmar Racing was relocated to North Carolina). McCord followed the team, relocating his family to Concord, NC for nine months. Eventually the call of Tennessee was too much for McCord and his family.

After a stint at Sadler Racing, McCord found his way “home” to BHR. He has filled about every position available in BHR and become a trusted confidant to Bobby Hamilton. This season the jack-of-all-trades is crowned as the Crew Chief for Chad Chaffin in the No. 18 Dickies Dodge. Hamilton felt McCord and Chaffin’s personalities work well together. With a seasoned Crew Chief and a patient driver’s expertise behind the wheel, the entire BHR operation will benefit.

“We have an amazing communication this year…something that a lot of teams don’t have,” McCord says. “It’s racing and, like it or lump it, we are all out here to win. That’s a goal this year, simply put, to win.”
