Dickies Racing Recap: Chaffin 10th in Points
HOMESTEAD, FL (November 19, 2004) – Dickies driver Chad Chaffin finished 15th in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season finale at Homestead-Miami Speedway and secured tenth-place in the final point standings. It was the team’s 15th top-15 finish of the season and second consecutive year to finish in the top 10 in points. Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: Homestead Ford 200 - Homestead-Miami Speedway Dickies Racing Preview: Homestead Under the Sun: “I am really looking forward to the racing and the weather at Homestead this weekend. It is a pretty straightforward track. Homestead is not difficult to drive, but you have to be able to use the draft to your advantage. We tested there and I really believe we found something good. The Dickies Racing Team is 10th in points going into this weekend’s Ford 200, but I know we can finish better than that. We need to have a solid top-10 run at Homestead and with a little luck I believe we can climb up as high as seventh position in the points standings. We have struggled a little this year on 1.5-mile tracks, but after testing there it doesn’t concern me as much this weekend. The Dickies Racing Team had a solid finish last week at Darlington and I am hoping to play off that run with an even better one in Homestead. Hopefully the bad luck is gone for good.” Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: Darlington Darlington 200 - Darlington Speedway Dickies Racing Recap: Darlington DARLINGTON, S.C., (November 13, 2004) - Chad Chaffin and the No. 18 Dickies Racing Team came into Darlington in need of a solid finish to turn around their bad luck, and that is exactly what they got. Chaffin overcame the challenges of the race track, racing solidly in the top-10 for most of the night. He finished 15th in the Darlington 200, garnering the team’s 13th top-15 of the season. Dickies Racing Preview: Darlington Under the Lights: “Darlington Raceway is my favorite race track. You race really close to the wall and if you are not careful it will bite you. The last time the Dickies Racing Team raced at Darlington we had a very solid run and I am looking forward to repeating that. This weekend we are running under the lights. I really enjoy night racing. It reminds me of the racing so many of the drivers in our series cut their teeth on. The fans love night racing because they can really see the sparks fly. I think it is good for our series because so many of our races are run on a Friday afternoon when many people are still at work. By running the race at night more fans will get to watch it live. I think we will begin to see more races in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series being run under the lights in the future.” Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: Phoenix Chevy Silverado 150 - Phoenix International Speedway Dickies Racing Recap: Phoenix PHOENIX (Nov. 5, 2004) – In the final laps of the Chevy Silverado 150 Dickies Driver Chad Chaffin tangled with another truck causing him to careen into the inside retaining wall and damage his Dodge. Because of the extensive damage, the team was forced to park the truck and finish the race in 30th position. The unfortunate accident dropped Chaffin to ninth in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series point battle, but he’s only five points out of eighth. Dickies Racing Preview:Phoenix Phoenix Preview: “Phoenix is a unique track. I enjoy traveling to the desert as much as I like racing on the track. It has two very distinct different corners and a dogleg on the back straightaway that is almost a corner in itself. The configuration of the track makes it very difficult to drive. You have to be on top of you’re “A” game at Phoenix. Phoenix reminds me of Gateway International Raceway. I am not sure if that is an accurate judgment, but I compare the two tracks a lot. I was in contention to win at Gateway and I am confident about our chances this weekend. We did not run well at Phoenix last year, but our flat-track program has stepped up this season and now I think we will be a threat in the end.” Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: Martinsville Kroger 200 - Martinsville Speedway Dickies Racing Recap: Martinsville MARTINSVILLE, VA (October 23, 2004)-Dickies Driver Chad Chaffin was climbing his way through the field when his No. 18 Dodge was involved in an accident on the front straightaway at Martinsville Speedway. As a result, Chaffin finished 30th in the Kroger 200. The accident caused the driver to fall to seventh position in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series point standings. Dickies Racing Preview: Martinsville New Surface: “Things are a little different as we head back to Martinsville to race again. They have resurfaced the track since we were last there because it came apart during the Nextel Cup race. I really liked the track before they did the resurfacing. It was kind of rough and challenging to drive. I had some solid finishes on the old surface, but according to people who have tested there, they said it was the right decision to resurface the track. Everyone has had positive things to say about it. I know Bobby has checked on it and has a pretty good idea of how the trucks are going to run on the track. We are prepared that the setup may be different than in the past years, but I’m sure we can adjust. This team is capable of doing that, so we will be just fine. I expect based on my previous experiences in Martinsville to come out of there with a top 10 finish.” Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: Texas Silverado 350K - Texas Motor Speedway Dickies Racing Recap:Texas FT WORTH, (October 16, 2004) – Dickies driver Chad Chaffin battled a loose race truck and dodged a big bullet during the Chevy Silverado 350K at Texas Motor Speedway on Saturday afternoon to finish in the 16th position at his sponsor’s home track. Chaffin remains in the sixth spot, only 22 out of fifth, in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points battle with only four races remaining. Dickies Racing Preview:Texas Confidence the Key: “Confidence plays a huge part in racing. The team has to have confidence in the driver and the driver has to have confidence in the team. It has to be the perfect equation. When I start a race I have 100 percent confidence that my team has done the best they can do to set up my truck. They have to have confidence that I can go out and win with what they have given me. The confidence level of the whole team is going to have its ups and downs. If you have a couple bad races in a row you really start to question your ability to either drive or the setups you’ve created. On the other hand, the confidence a victory can bring is immeasurable. I think the challenge is balancing the good and bad. You have to be able to except the bad races, learn from them and turn them into victories next time.” Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: California American Racing Wheels 200 - California Speedway Dickies Racing Recap: California Speedway FONTANA, Calif., (October 2, 2004) – After qualifying his Dickies Dodge in the 12th position, Chad Chaffin ran in the top 15 all night before finishing the American Racing Wheels 200 at California Speedway in the 11th spot. The respectable finish enabled the Dickies Racing Team to pick up one position in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points battle to sixth, now only 37 points behind fifth-place Matt Crafton. Dickies Preview: California
California Preview: “I enjoy going out west and racing on tracks like California Speedway. It offers multiple racing grooves. It is one of the tracks you can draft on and that becomes really noticeable as the race progresses. You will see much of the same racing action as we did in Michigan earlier in the season. You come really close to racing wide open at California, but never all the way. The ability to change grooves allows for great racing for the fans and the drivers. Racing under the lights provides a better show for the fans and I feel that is what many of the tracks are going after. I enjoy racing under the lights because the weather is a lot cooler and that benefits both the fans and the teams.” Chad Chaffin Race Recap: Vegas LAS VEGAS, (September 25, 2004) - Chad Chaffin battled an extremely loose race truck all night in the Las Vegas 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. The Dickies Racing Team adjusted the truck every opportunity they had to help their driver bring the Dodge home in 16th position. Dickies Racing Preview:Las Vegas Winning Fashion: “I know we can get back to victory lane. The thing about winning races is I can’t put a number on how many times I will win because I didn’t expect to win Dover or IRP. We go into every race thinking we can win and you have to position yourself for it. The last few races we have not been in that position. If we can get the Dickies Dodge luck turned back around and things go our way, we could win two or three of these final races. We have to get our focus back on winning. BHR will soon be back to its dominating fashion. In this sport you can’t predict a lot of things, but I am confident in my guys and that we’re going to be competitive enough to be in a position to win one race or two or more this season.” Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: Loudon Sylvania 200 - New Hampshire International Speedway Dickies Racing Recap: Sylvania 200 LOUDON, N.H., (September 18, 2004)- After 35 laps under green-caution conditions due to rain at New Hampshire International Speedway the race finally kicked off three hours and 45 minutes late. Dickies Driver Chad Chaffin fought a broken ratchet or axle making it difficult for him on every restart, but still managed to finish the Sylvania 200 in 16th position. Dickies Racing Recap: Richmond RICHMOND, VA (September 9, 2004)- Loss of track position and penalties on pit road proved to be the culprit of the 22nd place finish for the No. 18 Dodge in the Kroger 200 at Richmond International Raceway. Dickies driver Chad Chaffin’s 15th top 25 finish allowed him to maintain sixth position in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series point standings. Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: Richmond Kroger 200 - Richmond International Raceway Chaffin Richmond Preview One-Day Show: “If the truck isn’t running well, I prefer to have the Happy Hour practice and then race the following day. It gives Crew Chief Kip McCord and I time to sort some things out. If you unload and the truck is really fast, then you like the one-day shows because it doesn’t give everybody else a chance to catch up. We’ve had some success with the one-day show format this year. We ran one-day shows at IRP and Milwaukee and we finished first and second (respectively). At Nashville, even though it was a two-day show, it was run like a one-day event. We didn’t have a Happy Hour and we struggled a little bit there. So it just depends on how you’re running as to whether you will be fast or not. I think it’s harder on the crews than it is the driver doing everything in one day. They have to work all day to get the Dickies Dodge ready to race and then be fast on pit road that night. As for the driver, I don’t have a real preference.” Dickies Race Recap:Bristol Motor Speedway BRISTOL, Tenn., (August 25, 2004)- Dickies driver Chad Chaffin raced comfortably in the top 15 in the O’Reilly 200 at Bristol Motor Speedway until a wreck in turn three took him out of contention with only 33 laps to go. The Dickies Racing Team was able to repair the No. 18 Dodge with one lap to go allowing Chaffin to finish the race. Chaffin brought home the mangled Dodge in 29th place. Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: Bristol O'Reilly 200 by Valvoline Maxlife - Bristol Motor Speedway Chaffin Says No Strategy to Bristol: Bristol Preview Strategy, Not Here: “There is not much strategy at Bristol. We don't have happy hour there because it is a one-day show, so we'll have two hours of practice and that's it. If you aren't fast off the trailer, there's not a lot of chance you're going to get it fixed. It's not a very long race, because at 16 seconds per lap, 200 laps go by pretty quick. The biggest thing for me is to make sure I am mentally prepared. Things happen so fast there you don't have a lot of time to think about it, you have to rely on instinct.” Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: Nashville Toyota Tundra 200 - Nashville Superspeedway Chaffin Moves to Third in Points LEBANON, Tenn., (August 14, 2004) - Dickies driver Chad Chaffin overcame an extremely loose No. 18 Dodge to finish 12th in today’s Toyota Tundra 200. Chaffin’s 13th top-15 of the season moved him up one spot in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series point standings; he now sits third, 196 out of first. Dickies Racing Preview: Toyota Tundra 200 Inspiration from the Boss: “I wouldn’t have a career at this level if it weren’t for Bobby Hamilton. I’ll be quite frank about it. I’ve been around racing a long time and have won a lot of races over the years. But, at this level, I had kind of peaked out and was probably on the downside. I couldn’t get the really good rides. Bobby and I have known each other for a long time. He gave me the opportunity of a lifetime. He gives me great trucks. He’s an awesome driver. He’s one of the top three or four racing guys in the United States – I’m talking crew chiefs, owners, everything. He eats and breathes racing. He knows it inside and out. Last week we were just good enough to beat him, and if I’m good enough to beat him then I’m good enough to win the race. I gauge my success how I’m running against him. It’s not that I’m just trying to beat the boss, but I know he’s good. He does a great job at setting the bar for the rest of us and if I can get up to him and run there, I’ve got a shot at winning the race.” Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: Indianapolis Power Stroke Diesel 200 Dickies Race Recap: Chaffin Wins IRP INDIANAPOLIS, IN (August 6, 2004) - Dickies driver Chad Chaffin jumped to the outside of Johnny Sauter coming off turn two of the final lap at Indianapolis Raceway Park. The duo battled down the back straightaway and into turns three and four; and it was Chaffin who scored his second win this season in the Power Stroke Diesel 200. The victory moved Chaffin up two spots in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series point standings. He now sits fourth, 138 out of first. Dickies Racing Preview: IRP Subbing for Bobby: (Chad Chaffin) “I subbed for Bobby (Hamilton, truck owner) one time at IRP because he was busy practicing his Winston Cup ride at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He was driving the Dana Dodge for the truck race and he asked me to come to Indianapolis and practice it for him. I jumped at the chance. I remember being really nervous. I thought what if I put this thing in the wall? If that happened it would ruin his whole weekend. I wanted to do a really good job and help him get the truck worked out. Bobby thanked me on TV and that made my day. It was a lot of fun, but a lot of pressure. At the time it was a big deal for me to be able to do that for him.” Chad Chaffin Racing Recap: Michigan Dickies driver Chad Chaffin overcame an ill-handling No.18 Dodge to finish 11th in the LINE-X Spray-On Truck Bedliners 200 at Michigan International Speedway. It was Chaffin’s 11th top-15 finish this season.

Line-X Spray-on Truck Bedliners 200 Chad Chaffin Dickies Preview: Michigan Michigan Preview: “I am confident in our chances this weekend at Michigan. I finished third there last year and the Dickies Dodge continues to be extremely fast off the trailer. We will just make the adjustments needed to ensure a solid run. I would love to see the Dickies Dodge come out of Michigan third in points. I feel third in points is defiantly within our reach in the next few races. This team is going to stay focused and keep doing what we are doing. Michigan is just another week in this business.” Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: St. Louis Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers Ram Tough 200 Chad Chaffin Race Recap: Ram Tough 200 Dickies driver Chad Chaffin survived an excitement-filled Dodge Ram Tough 200 at Gateway International Raceway bringing the No. 18 Dodge home in fourth position. Chaffin’s fifth top-five finish of the season enabled him to close the gap in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series point standings. He now sits fifth, 187 out of first. Chad Chaffin Dickies Racing Preview: Missouri-Illinois Dodge Dealers Ram Tough 200 Gateway: “Gateway is an unusual track. It looks like it was built to fit the exact available acreage there. They squeezed it in between the drag strip and the interstate. The front and back straightaway is really long, which causes us to shift from third gear to fourth gear when we run through there. It has narrow, sweeping corners. I feel good about our chances at Gateway. The Joey Arrington motors are running great and I know I will have a fast truck. My team has been doing an awesome job of having the truck prepared for race day. We are going with the intention of winning, but I would be thrilled with a top-five finish to keep our streak going.” Chad Chaffin Photo Gallery: Kentucky Built Ford Tough 225 Dickies Racing Recap Built Ford Tough 225 Dickies driver Chad Chaffin dodged both illness and a spin to finish fifth in the Built Ford Tough 225 at Kentucky Speedway. We had a chance to win the race. Dennis Setzer passed us and we raced each other hard, but clean. With three laps to go, we ran out of fuel. So we had a good truck for that race and showed our hand. That just goes to show, if the truck is right then it makes the driver look like the hero. I know my teammate (Bobby Hamilton) will be strong this weekend because he is one of the best on the track. Our trucks are very good and our setups are right on now. So we will be one of the teams to beat."
