The No. 4 Dodge Ram Race Recap
• Compton qualified 18th on Thursday evening by posting a speed of 174.452 mph.
• Following the drop of the green flag Compton made a charge to the front of the pack. In just three laps around TMS he passed six trucks and moved himself into the 12th position.
• “It is a little tight in the center and on exit,” he said to Crew Chief Bryant Frazier on lap 10. Frazier assured him they would fix it on the first pit stop.
• On lap 15 Compton realized something was not right with the No. 4 Blake Fulenwider Dodge. “It is acting like it is missing down the straightaway,” said Compton. “It is backfiring for sure.” He fell to 15th position.
• He radioed in again five laps later to describe the problem again. “It is getting worse,” He said while running 15th. “Maybe it is a bad coil wire.”
• “When it skips it just stops,” Compton said five laps later. Frazier assured him they were working on a plan of attack to address the problem on the first pit stop. Meanwhile, Compton was dropping positions fast.
• The first caution waved on lap 34 for debris. Compton came down pit road to the attention of the Dodge Racing Team. They went underneath the hood to diagnose the problem. Another crew member climbed inside the left side of the truck to see if it was an electrical problem. After changing four tires and adding fuel they sent Compton on his way in 29th position.
• Several laps later the Virginia Native radioed in the problem had not been fixed. Frazier explained to him they were preparing to change the ignition box and the carburetor on the next pit stop. Compton fell one lap down to the leader on lap 57.
• The second caution came out on lap 62 for an accident on the backstretch. “We are going to come in and change the carburetor, the ignition box, four tires and add fuel before you leave,” said Frazier as soon as the caution waved. The Dodge Racing Team jumped into action to fix the problem. The field restarted before everything could be fixed. Compton returned to the track in 30th position, eight laps down.
• “It is still missing,” he radioed several laps later. He came back down pit road on lap 73 for another look at the problem.
• On lap 87 the engine on the No. 4 Dodge expired and Compton retired from competition in 30th position.
Ron Hornaday Jr. won the Sam’s Town 400. Kyle Busch finished second, Johnny Benson., Jack Sprague and Todd Bodine followed in the top five.
