ľ The Virginia native will be making his 13th NASCAR start this weekend at his home track Martinsville Speedway. He has seven Sprint Cup Series starts, one Nationwide start and four previous NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series starts at the famed Virginia short track.
ľ Compton will be sporting the Shelor Dodge paint scheme this weekend at Martinsville. The Fierce February Finish Challenge was a contest in which the Roanoke sales district dealerships competed against one another and the dealer who sold the most new Dodge vehicles (all Dodge Vehicles) in February won the battle. Although it was a close battle most of the contest, Shelor Dodge was able to pull away from the pack and win the race sponsorship.
ƒæ Compton will pilot ¡§Magnum¡¨ this weekend at Martinsville. It was one of two trucks that Compton and team took to the Martinsville test earlier this month. Due to Magnum¡¦s testing times, the team elected to take Magnum back for this weekend¡¦s race.
Martinsville and the Champ: ¡§In 1996 I went to Martinsville to attempt the Sprint Cup Series race. I had been to Martinsville in a late model, but never in anything as powerful as a cup car. We qualified in the top 10 which blew a lot of people away. We sent some really good cars home that weekend. After qualifying Mike Wallace came up to me and said, ¡¥I don¡¦t know you and you don¡¦t know me, but you have no idea what you just did today.¡¦ And honestly I didn¡¦t. We ran well in the race, but ended up burning up our brakes about halfway through the event. A couple of weeks later we were in Charlotte and Jeff Gordon came up to me. I wasn¡¦t really sure what he was going to say. I was trying to think if I had done something to him on the track when he said, ¡¥What you did in Martinsville was a neat deal. I hope to see you in the garage area for a long time.¡¦ He will never know what that meant to me. I was a late model driver just trying to make it and he was a Cup Champion taking the time to talk to me. Ever since that day I have been a fan of Jeff Gordon.¡¨
Always a Joker: ¡§Back in the early days of racing I took part in my share of practical jokes. I still do today, but not as often as I would like. Racing is such a business now that we have to watch our P¡¦s and Q¡¦s more often than in the past. One of my favorite jokes I played was several years ago. I announced the engagement of a couple at dinner one night at a restaurant. Everyone was there including both set of parents. She was excited and he was terrified because it wasn¡¦t true. I thought it was a pretty good joke, but they didn¡¦t think it was that great.¡¨
Testing at Martinsville Beneficial for Several Races:
¡§The testing schedule in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is very limited at the tracks we actually race at. So I think when they choose a track for us they try to make sure it is one a team can get a lot out of. Not only will you gain knowledge for races here at Martinsville, but you will be able to carry what you learned to Mansfield, Milwaukee, Memphis and even Phoenix late in the season. When you are able to test at a track and apply the knowledge you learn to that many tracks, it makes it worthwhile.¡¨
