No. 4 Landmark Dodge Ram Race Recap
The American Commercial Lines 200
Atlanta Motor Speedway
Hampton, GA (March 10, 2008) – Dodge Driver Stacy Compton and team headed to Atlanta Motor Speedway on a mission this past weekend. They wanted to overcome the racing challenges they had been through at the AMS test and the race at California Speedway. After making huge gains in practice Compton qualified 10th for the American Commercial Lines 200. He knew he was on the right track. Despite running in the top 10 most of the night tire trouble in the final laps of the 130 lap event derailed the No. 4 Landmark Dodge from a 10th place finish. Compton finished 19th in the third NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series event of the season.
The No. 4 Landmark Dodge Atlanta Race Recap
• Despite several rain showers early Friday morning NCTS qualifying went on as scheduled that afternoon. Compton cranked out a great lap securing a 10th place starting position for the American Commercial Lines 200.
• Once the race started he quickly picked up two spots moving into eighth.
• The first caution waved on lap 20 for an accident on the front stretch. “It is a little free,” said Compton under caution while running in the 10th spot. “But it’s not bad at all.” Crew Chief Bryant Frazier made the call to bring Compton down pit road for service. The Landmark Dodge Racing Team changed all four tires, added fuel and made a slight air pressure adjustment to the Dodge Ram. Compton restarted in 11th place.
• Over the next 20 laps the No. 4 Landmark Dodge developed a loose condition. “It is a little loose when I get in the corner and a little loose when I get out of the corner,” said Compton as he ran in the 13th position.
• A spin on the frontstretch brought out the second caution on lap 42. Once again Compton hit pit road for service. After receiving four tires, fuel and a minor track bar adjustment Compton returned to the track in the 16th spot.
• “That track bar adjustment really helped,” said Compton as he begun to gain positions on the track after the restart. “This thing is really fast.” In just 20 laps he drove the No. 4 Landmark Dodge back into the top 10.
• On lap 80 things almost took a turn for the worse for Compton and the Landmark Dodge Racing Team. “I have a vibration,” said Compton. “I think it is a tire going down.” Frazier advised Compton to ride it out a couple of laps to make sure a tire was what he was feeling. Several laps later the vibration was gone.
• A long green flag run forced the No. 4 Dodge to pit under green-flag conditions on lap 94. The Landmark Dodge Racing Team cranked out a great stop changing all four tires and adding fuel in record time, sending Compton back on the track in 10th position right in front of leader Kyle Busch.
• Despite running fast laps times Compton could not hold off record setting speeds from leader Kyle Busch and fell one lap down.
• Rain forced another caution on lap 112. “I still feel like I have a tire going down,” said Compton while running 12th. “I believe it is a right rear, but I am not sure.” With only 15 laps remaining in the event and not wanting to lose valuable track position Compton and crew elected to take a chance on the tire and not pit.
• Another round of rain forced another caution and then red flag on lap 121. “We have to pit when pit road opens,” said Compton while running 16th. “I have to have fresh tires.” Several laps later he did just that. The Landmark Dodge Team changed all four tires and sent Compton on his way.
• Unfortunately tire troubles in the final laps of the third NCTS race of the season ruined Compton’s strong run at AMS. He finished in the 19th spot.
Kyle Busch won the American Commercial Lines 200. Ron Hornaday, Mike Skinner, Matt Crafton and Chad McCumbee rounded out the top five.
