After its recent move to Martinsville, VA Bobby Hamilton Racing added some new key players to its personnel. Bryant Frazier, Crew Chief for driver Stacy Compton and the No. 4 Dodge Motorsports Dodge, is one of those many new additions. Frazier, who has over 20 years of crew chief experience in NASCAR Sprint Cup (NSCS) and Nationwide Series’(NNS), will bring this knowledge to BHR when he calls the shots for the first time in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS).
Growing up in Gadsden, Alabama, Frazier spent many Sunday afternoons with childhood friend Steve Grissom. “Steve and I would always walk home together from church,” said Frazier. “Our friendship grew over time and so did our passion for racing.” As Grissom begin to turn heads at short tracks across Alabama, Frazier became an instrumental part of the team. Grissom eventually made the jump to the All-Pro Series where the duo won a championship in 1985.
When Grissom moved into the NNS one year later Frazier followed. The two found victory lane together in 1990 at New River Valley Speedway and backed that up by scoring three more wins that season. Over the next six years Grissom and Frazier scored four more wins and the 1993 Nationwide Championship before Frazier made the decision to move to another race team.
In March of 1995 Frazier began working for Bobby Labonte Motorsports. He called the shots for Labonte in the NNS for two years scoring two wins and three poles. Eventually Bobby Labonte Motorsports was bought out by Joe Gibbs and became Joe Gibbs Racing.
While at Gibbs, Frazier worked with Labonte until he was asked to crew chief a new kid called Tony Stewart. He called the shots for Stewart’s first two years in the NNS garnering XXX top fives and XX top-10 finishes.
Since that time Frazier has been on top of the pit box making pit calls for many drivers and teams including Jamie McMurray, Rusty Wallace Inc. and Haas CNC Racing.
Despite Frazier’s numerous years of experience the NCTS will present a new challenge for him in 2008.
“I have never worked in the truck series before January or with Stacy Compton,” said Frazier. “It will present its own set of challenges because the trucks are very different from a car. The races are much shorter and you are only given limited tires for each race. I think pit strategy pays a huge roll into winning in the NCTS each and every weekend. You really have to be on top of your game.”
All together Frazier has a very successful career in motorsports with a NNS Championship, 11 victories and 15 poles to his name. And as fate would have it Frazier’s sister went on to marry his childhood friend Steve Grissom.
