NASCAR did what they could Friday night to start the Ford 200, the final race of the 2005 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series season, but the rain poured down dampening every effort. So Saturday morning Bailey’s driver Bobby Hamilton started in the 21st position and finished the race in 31st after he blew a tire and crashed in turns one and two totaling his No. 04 Bailey’s Dodge.

One year after Bobby Hamilton provided Dodge with their first NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver’s championship veteran Ted Musgrave provided Dodge with a second consecutive NCTS driver’s crown in Saturday morning’s Ford 200 at Homestead-Miami Speedway. Rookie of the year contender Timothy Peters proved to be the second highest finishing Dodge with a 15th place finish in his No. 4 Bailey’s Dodge. The event was run 12 hours after its scheduled Friday night start after intermittent rain showers forced the postponement of the event.

Thoughts on the last NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race of 2005: “I am pretty confident going into the last race of the year. I think that I have halfway met my expectations for the year. We have had some bumps in the road but the little ones we have are to be expected considering that I am rookie driver. I have definitely learned a lot over the course of the 2005 season and I am looking forward to going to Homestead and applying what I have learned and trying to get a good finish for the folks from Bailey’s and all my teammates at Bobby Hamilton Racing.”

Is There Pressure to Win: “I don’t do that. We won the biggest race of the season and turned right around and won our second race. Obviously, we won four last year and we’ve not done that this year but there are two reasons for that. We got off a little bit because we’re trying to get better and the competition has stepped up another 18 percent or so if you look at the numbers. So that means us getting behind, plus the competition is very easy to be in that position but we’re still probably one of the most consistent race teams out there. We should not be fourth or fifth in points right now.”

Under The Miami Sun: “I really like racing at Homestead and I love the sunny weather. You can run right next to the yellow line. It has progressive banking, which allows you to run a lane up from the yellow line. The top groove has not come in yet, but it will the more we race on the track. You can pass people and I like that. You don’t have to follow the guy in front of you and wait for him to mess up before you can complete the pass. The track is down by the beaches so there is lots of sand in the air. It looses a ton of grip every time we go back because of it being down by the coast.

Phoenix Preview: “I raced at Phoenix last year in the Truck race and in the Busch race in 2003. I feel like I have experience heading into this weekend. It is a really fun track to race on, but it is unique. It is tricky track and it took me some time to figure the place out but towards the end of the race last year I was very comfortable getting around the place. It has two very distinct different corners and a dogleg on the back starightaway that is almost a corner in itself.

Texas Preview: “Texas is a fast race track. Its reminds me of Atlanta and Lowes Motor Speedway,
but has a distinctive attitude. Texas is a 1.5–mile quad-oval track and is known for it’s extreme speeds. I experienced it first hand when we were there in June. I was turned right into the wall and felt the force as I hit. I had a mild concussion and spent the last half of the race in the hospital going through tests. Thankfully everything was good, but it killed our truck. In fact, that chassis has never been rebuilt because it sustained so much damage. Even though I had the wreck I am really excited about heading to Texas. As a driver you love it because it has lots of grip and you can really choose which lane you would like to run. It gives you options in that it has a low groove and high groove that makes for exciting battles on the track. The guy who wins the race is the guy who can run wide open around the entire track and never lift.”

What Motivates You: “Failure motivates me. I don’t mean like wrecking in a truck race, or an IROC race, that is not something that I consider failure. I am more talking about failure to make a race. Such as when John Mickel qualified as the highest BHR Dodge and didn’t make the race in Atlanta. He is such a nice guy and we look forward to working with him again in Texas. This time he has a place in the lineup no matter what so we won’t have to go through that again. I also look at our Nextel Cup car as something that motivates me and I don’t think anything we’ve done on it this year is a failure. We’ve learned so much and have made great strides each time we run it. So I am motivated to keep learning more. We take a lot of pride in our operation at BHR and to keep it going is motivation enough.”

Atlanta Preview: “I love racing at Atlanta Motor Speedway. It is a lot of fun for a driver because the track gives you so many options. It is a very fast multiple-groove race track that allows us room to pass and race side-by-side. It is not uncommon to race side-by-side or three-wide the entire race. I will guarantee you it will be an exciting finish. I was watching television the other day and a commercial for the track came on. They showed the last lap pass Bobby (Hamilton) made on Mike (Skinner) more than a year ago and I still go chill bumps thinking how close it was. In March we backed it up with another exciting finish.

Final IROC Race: “One of the best things about winning the championship last year was to be able to compete in the IROC series this season. It is a very short season in those cars, but I have really enjoyed getting to know the Signore family and running those IROC cars. Jay, Barbara and George have all been more than kind to each of us drivers. They really put a lot into making the IROC cars a spectacular show and giving Crown Royal the recognition for sponsoring the series. It has been a great learning experience for me. The cars are a lot slower than I thought they would feel like, but they are a ton of fun to drive. I learned some things this year in those cars that I would do differently if I ever get the chance to run them again

Staying Focused until the End: “Having the past three weekends off sure gave me a lot of time to think about the season so far. It is hard to believe we have only five races left. The No. 18 Dodge Racing Team has not had a bad season, but it is defiantly not what we were hoping for. I tried not to think about it too much during our break, but it creped into my mind often. I have realized the importance of staying focused till the end of the season. You can’t let things that happened during the season get you down. I try not to get too rattled regardless of the situation I may be in. When I arrive at the track I have a one-track mind of getting the truck running competitively. So much of our sport is out of your control and I have to remind myself that a lot during the season. Let’s face it you have to be professional in this sport.

Renewed Confidence: “Oh yeah, I have a tremendous amount of renewed confidence coming into this race. We were able to bring our late model to Martinsville during our break in NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series action and we won the Bailey’s 300 which is one of the bigger late–model races of the year. That combined with the fact that we had a great test in Martinsville last week gives me a great deal of enthusiasm coming into the Kroger 200. Martinsville is also the first track that I have had a chance to return to since I started in the NCTS so that helps as well. I am looking forward to going back and improving on our finish.”

Short Track Guru: “We’ve done a ton of testing over the past three week vacation. I’ve sent one team here and another one there. That is one of the best things about having three full time teams. We can base our notes on what the feedback from each other’s test shows. So for this race in Martinsville, we’ll be talking to short track guru and Martinsville winner Timothy Peters. He knows the track in and out and was extremely fast there for the test. I know that the basis he gives us there is something we can trust. The only drawback to a short track is that anything can happen at any time and cost you a good finish.

Frustrations on the Track: “It seems like lately we have taken the ‘racing’ out of racing. The last few races it seems all we are doing is tearing up trucks. We no longer race for a position. If we want the position then we just move the person out of the way. It’s frustrating. Sometimes you feel like an egg in a frying pan. You get so hot over a situation you are on the verge of popping. But you know you can’t pop because then you have to answer to NASCAR. I think a handful of drivers don’t care anymore.

The only bad thing about it is that we don’t run enough races. I’ve already thought about this. The way the schedule is, the Cup guys would start it first and the Busch cars would start it second then we would start it third. So it would be a stair step for all media outlets to focus on. I don’t think you can do it with 10 races to go in Craftsman Trucks because we only run 25 races. But I think you can do it with five, six, or seven.

Bristol Preview: Bristol is a race fans dream. It has high banks, fast speeds and side-by-side racing. It is a fun track to race on, but can be mentally draining. Things happen so quick at Bristol you can’t have a game plan. You don’t have a lot of time to react what is happening in front of you. I will rely heavily on my spotter (Jerry Adcock) during the race. You can’t see what is happening in the corners so Jerry is my eyes. I never second-guess what he tells me and at Bristol you don’t have time to question anything. If we can come out of Bristol with all four fenders on it I will be happy

Short Track Battles: “Every time we go to Bristol tempers always flare. It’s typical of short track racing, so I don’t see this event any different than the others. Bristol Motor Speedway has played off that for years. As a driver, I like to race like that because it takes me back to my roots. As an owner, I hate it because you usually bring home a torn up race truck. With three teams the chances of tearing a truck up is pretty high. We seem to be doing a good enough job of that just in these last few weeks. It seems as though all of our teams have been in the wrong place at the wrong time. Timothy tore one up last week when Robert Pressley ran over him and then I was cruising along and missed a wreck then Rich Bickle just turned into me. We can’t seem to escape the accidents. That’s all part of racing though.

Things were going great for NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series rookie of the year candidate Timothy Peters one third of the way through Saturday’s Toyota Tundra 200 at Nashville Superspeedway. Peters’ No. 4 Bailey’s Dodge was handling flawlessly; he had great track position, and he was running strongly inside the top-ten. To sum it up, Peters appeared to be on his way to his best career NCTS finish until fellow competitor Robert Pressley became the “Grinch Who Stole Christmas.”

Nashville Preview: “Nashville is a fun track to race on. I will be making my eighth career start at the track this weekend so I have a lot of confidence heading into Saturday afternoon. The track has really come along away from when it was first built. I remember the first time I drove around the track it was super slick. The track has done an awesome job working with the surface and taking out some of the bumps that caused problems in the beginning. It has tons of grip now and is an exciting track to compete on. It has provided for some awesome finishes in the past few years and this weekend will be no different. The second groove is starting to come in and I expect you will see side-by-side racing from the drop of the green flag to the checkered.”

Hometown: “I’m glad to stay at home this weekend. We’ve were gone most of last week doing a race with Ken Schrader in Pevely, then on to Indy for the Craftsman Truck and Nextel Cup race. So it is good to be back home and have what seems like a normal week. I can go to the shop everyday and get some work done to get caught up. Nashville is one of my favorite places to race. I don’t know if that is because I finally won a guitar last year or just because of the speed of the track. The guitar is definitely one of my favorite trophies I own. I don’t even put it out very often in my display cases at the race shop because I don’t want someone to take it or touch it for that matter. It’s nice to be in front of the hometown crowd and go for another trophy. This time I told Bobby Jr. if I win, he gets it.”

Nashville Superspeedway: “I have never laid eyes on that track before, but that is okay. I had never seen Dover before either and we had our best race of the year there when we qualified fourth and finished sixth, so hopefully we will have similar results. That is what this team needs is another race with a good finish like Dover. Nashville is a concrete racetrack just like Dover. I would hate to think that I can only race on concrete but I will take another top-ten finish here this weekend. The truck I am racing here at Nashville is better than the truck we had at Dover, so I am optimistic about our chances. ”

It is a one-day show so you have to unload and get down to business. The schedule does not allow us much free time so you must be on top of your game. I expect us to be fast off the trailer. Last year we had a competitive truck and were plagued by a mechanical failure. I was able to run with the leaders even though I was 20 laps down. The chassis I am piloting this weekend is the defending winner of the race. My guys have been reminding me of that all week. When I got it back home, I had the guys tear it down to see why we were so fast. It surprised me, but made me aware that my teams can compete. It’s our first in-house car. We built it ourselves; we bought the chassis from PPI (Motorsports) and then put on our front and rear clips. We have a very good truck organization, but I’m smart enough to know that experience is what counts, and running a Cup team week in and week out is huge.

I ran well there in a Busch car two years ago. We really had something figured out and were headed to the front when the engine let go. Having two solid runs there gives me confidence heading into this weekend. At Memphis it is really important to hit on your chassis set-up. It has two distinct corners. Turns one and two are really fast and turns three and four are a lot slower, but sharper. That is why you have to get your truck dialed in because it is important to be able to turn through the both corners well. It is important to conserve your brakes during the race

The setups are not the same because Texas requires more spring than Charlotte so you cannot take the same setup, but it is the same type chassis. Texas is a 1.5–mile quad-oval track and is known for it’s extreme speeds that give off extreme G-Forces. You know the G-forces are there, but they really don’t affect the way you perform. Texas is a track you definitely don’t want to crash at because you know it will hurt. Texas you tend to be both tight and loose during the race weekend. You need a loose truck to qualify up front. Thoughts on Dover:
“It is a tough race track and it has a great reputation but right now my biggest plus is that my confidence is built up from the run we had at Charlotte last week. We had a great truck at Charlotte and it helped prove to me that we could run upfront in the top five and be competitive on a high speed racetrack. That was a big step for me and this team. I was disappointed in our finish; we got crashed about two thirds of the way through, but at least we got crashed while we were running up front as opposed to running back in the pack. Dover will be another learning experience for us. Hopefully I can pick up on all the things I need to learn fairly quickly and get up to speed.”

“Mansfield reminds me of good old short-track racing. You have to be on top of your game as soon as you unload because it is very hard to pass. Qualifying is not my strong point, but I know heading into this weekend we have to think about starting up front. It is a whole lot easier to pass five trucks on your way to the leader than start in the back and have to pass 20 trucks. I consider Mansfield as one of my best tracks last year, but I ended up in a wreck. Mansfield is a lot like Martinsville because you have to stay calm and keep your front-end clean to be there at the end of the race. Things are going to happen on a short track you cannot control, so you have to be on your toes and keep your temper in check. I look forward to the race and the fans are great in Ohio. ”
