Sanders Makes Solid Run in Camp Courageous Dodge
08-14-2006 | Gladeville, TN

Camp Courageous driver Sammy Sanders managed to earn a top 25 finish after a sneaky pit strategy bit the team in the early laps of the Toyota Tundra 200 at Nashville Superspeedway.  After qualifying his No. 04 Dodge in the 30th starting position, the Nashville champion did a great job working his way through the field, avoiding numerous cautions and ran strong for the entire 150-lap event.

"I’m really glad I had the opportunity to promote Camp Courageous and get them some exposure during this event.  I felt like we had a really good truck all weekend; we unloaded on Friday and practiced in the 11th position.  That is great considering I didn’t have a lot of laps under my belt there, so we made good use of our time.  I learned a lot from this race about how far I could push the truck and not overdo it.  The biggest positive of it all was that we brought the truck home in one piece and so now all we have to do is comb over the truck piece by piece and its ready for the next race.”

• Sanders drove his No. 04 Camp Courageous Dodge around the 1.33 mile-oval in 30.474 seconds at a speed of 157.472 mph.
• In the opening laps Sanders radioed that the truck felt “a little snappy in turns three and four.”  He told his crew that he was getting his bearings straight and that everything was ok right now.
• Then the second caution came out on lap 26 and again Sanders stayed out on the racetrack while others took advantage of the down time to pit and make changes.
• In only a few laps another caution came out bringing what the team, along with several others, predicted to be a chain of cautions.  They made a plan to use the strategy for track position and told Sanders to remain on the race track in the sixth position.
• Sanders got passed by several trucks with fresher tires and then on lap 67, then just before he and several other veteran competitors  ran out of gas he was forced to pit under green flag conditions for four fresh tires and fuel.
• Then on lap 76 the long awaited caution came out, a few laps too late.  The team was already two laps down to the rest of the field, but still took advantage of their time to help tighten the Camp Courageous Dodge up by going two rounds up on the track bar and adding two rounds in the left rear cross.  Sanders told his Crew Chief on a scale of one to 10 for loose, “I am a five in turns three and four.”
• In the ensuing laps Sanders drove his line on the race track and missed several accidents happening around him.  On lap 99 Sanders got really loose, causing the truck to almost spin out on him, but he used his savvy driving skills to save the truck.
• The team pitted once again on lap 111 under caution and used the time to help tighten the truck up.
• Sanders raced smart, skillful and quick on his toes under the green-white-checkered flag race ending to bring his Camp Courageous Dodge home in the 25th position.

Johnny Benson took advantage of a last lap mishap between the first two positions and won the Toyota Tundra 200. Jack Sprague finished second, Marcus Ambrose, Ted Musgrave, and Brendan Gaughan rounded out the top five.  The next event for the NCTS competitors is at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 23rd.
