Peters' Strong Run Derailed by Late Race Misfortune
08-14-2006 | Gladeville, TN
After qualifying his Dodge Motorsports Dodge in the fourth position for the Toyota Tundra 200, Timothy Peters proved he was a force to be reckoned with on the concrete surface of Nashville Superspeedway. The sophomore season driver ran in the top six positions for most of the 150-lap race when in the final laps he suffered a cut right rear tire forcing him to pit under green flag conditions and finish the event in 19th position.
"That was a hard one to swallow, a disappointed Peters said after the race. Im so proud of my team, they had great pit stops helping me keep my top five positions on the track and my crew chief made great calls. We unloaded quick at the start of the weekend and had a top five truck the whole time we were there. I feel like I drove a competitive, but smart race. If we didnt have that tire get a two-inch cut in it at the end under green, I may not have won the race but I sure know I would have been in the top three. Were disappointed but everyone knew we were there this weekend for sure.
Peters drove his No. 4 Dodge Motorsports Dodge around the 1.33 mile-oval in 29.722 seconds at a speed of 161.456 mph. Peters was 0.121 seconds from the pole starting position. In the opening laps Peters remained in the top five using his time under cautions to tell his Crew Chief Marcus Richmond that his truck was tight.
By the fourth caution on lap 35 the BHR driver had worked his way into the third position when he entered pit road for four fresh Goodyear Wranglers and Sunoco fuel. The team performed a timely pit stop taking on round out of the right rear to aid his tight condition. On lap 40 Peters restarted the race in 19th position as several teams chose not to pit at this time. Only five laps later Peters had passed his way up to the 12th position. In the ensuing laps he managed to tick off spot after spot. By the fifth caution on lap 76 Peters was back in the top five. Richmond called him to pit road once again on lap 76 for four tires and fuel. This time the team made a slight air pressure adjustment to help free the truck up. Peters restarted in the sixth position.
In the next laps he managed to maintain that spot battling two and three wide with competitors and proving that he was the strongest holding his position. Under caution on lap 111 Richmond told Peters to protect his right front tire because at least other seven teams were having trouble with tires during the event. Then while Peters was running in the eighth spot, he radioed on lap 118 under green flag conditions that his right rear tire was going down. He was forced to pit losing one lap to the leaders and falling back into the field to the 22nd spot. Peters worked his way up to receive the lucky dog but unfortunately the final caution fell with only six laps to go. Peters managed to pick up a few more positions and finish the event in 19th.
Johnny Benson took advantage of a last lap mishap between the first two positions and won the Toyota Tundra 200. Jack Sprague finished second, Marcus Ambrose, Ted Musgrave, and Brendan Gaughan rounded out the top five. The next event for the NCTS competitors is at Bristol Motor Speedway on August 23rd.
