Danny Gill brought a wealth of knowledge to the No.
18 Dodge team despite his relatively short tenure as a NASCAR crew chief. Gill
rejoined Bobby Hamilton Racing (BHR) at the beginning of 2002, after spending a
year and a half working with several other teams in the NASCAR Winston Cup
Series and NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.
Gill’s first term with BHR began in November of 1998, when a phone call from
Bobby Hamilton prompted a move to the newly formed BHR team. That first year
with the team Gill served as the Truck Chief before being promoted to Crew Chief
in 2000. He held that position until mid-2000, when he left to join
Morgan-McClure in the NASCAR Winston Cup Series.
Over the next year or so, it was a rocky road, with some success, but never the
situation that Gill really wanted. That is until rejoining BHR with driver
Robert Pressley behind the wheel for the 2002 season.
Gill began his racing career in the mid 1980’s when he competed in mini-stocks
and late models at Nashville Speedway USA.
During the late 1980’s until 1994, Gill worked as a mechanic at a local
Nashville speed shop and raced on the weekends. He even found time to complete a
Bachelor Degree in Business Administration at Middle Tennessee State University
in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
In 1994, Gill decided to make a change and start his own business. He began
building racecars that could compete at tracks in and around the Nashville area.
He kept his business going until 1998, when he was offered a job at Sadler
Racing.
Gill stayed with Sadler Racing until his move to BHR. During his career, Gill
has worked with drivers Andy Hillenburg, Bobby Hamilton, Joe Ruttman, Dennis
Setzer, Jimmy Hensley, and Bobby Hamilton Jr. |
