No. 18 BHR Dodge Chase Montgomery New Hampshire Race Review
09-20-2005 | Las Vegas, NV

BHR Driver Chase Montgomery was on his way to securing another top 25 finish when a broken wheel stud, a part that holds the lug nut on the tire, on the right front forced the team behind the wall with only 30 laps left in the Sylvania 200. The NASCAR official would not let Montgomery back on the track unless all five lug nuts were secured. The $10 part could not be repaired in the remaining laps and resulted in a disappointing 34th place finish at New Hampshire International Speedway.  .

“It always seems like when you are having a good run something goes bad,” said Montgomery after the race. “Stuff like this is going to happen and there is nothing you can do to control it.  That is what makes racing such a competitive sport. I knew I had a vibration early in the race, but I was not sure what it was. I had convinced myself it wasn’t a tire going down because we came in and changed them and the vibration continued. I knew it had to be the right front wheel. The worst part about this race is we were on our way to another top 25 finish. I am glad to know what the vibration was, but I just wished we had more laps left in the race to fix it. It’s NASCAR rule we have to have all five lug nuts on the tire to be on the track so there was nothing we could do, but load up and go home. We will just go after them in Las Vegas.”

• Montgomery qualified 29th for the 19th race of the season.

• On lap25 the first of 9 cautions waved for fluid on the track. Montgomery, running in the 33rd position, radioed he was battling a tight condition. Crew Chief Kip McCord made the decision for the No. 18 Dodge to come down pit road for fuel and a track bar adjustment to aid the tight condition. He restarted in the 26th position.

• 10 laps later Montgomery radioed in the tight condition was not getting any better, but worse.

•  The second caution came out for a spin in turn four on lap 57. Montgomery requested help with the tight condition and notified the team of a slight vibration on the right side. The No. 18 Dodge came down pit road for four tires, two cans of fuel and a major track bar adjustment. He restarted in the 27th position.

•  By the third caution on lap 73 Montgomery, running in the 23rd position, said the tight condition was getting better the more green flag laps he ran.

• On lap 107 the fifth caution came out for a spin in turn four.  Montgomery radioed the front tires were beginning to bounce around and he was concerned the tire vibration was getting worse. McCord called for two tires, fuel and another track bar adjustment to help the handling of the truck. He restarted in 17th spot.

• By the 7th caution on lap 137 Montgomery had worked his way into the top 15.

• 20 laps later while battling for the 21st position, Montgomery radioed the vibration was persistent every lap and there definitely a problem with the right front.

• The eighth caution came out on lap 170 just in time for Montgomery to come down pit road to the attention of The No. 18 Dodge Racing Team. The team was in the process of changing all four tires and adding fuel when they realized the cause of the vibration. A wheel stud broke on the right front forcing Montgomery behind the wall.

• The team was unable to repair the damaged wheel with only 30 laps left in the race. The damaged wheel resulted in a 34th place finish.
