N0. 18 BHR Dodge Chase Montgomery Richmond Race Preview

Richmond Preview: “Richmond is an exciting race track to race under the lights. It is a fast track and the fans always come out and support us. The track does a great job of promoting the entire weekend as a whole and the fans really come out for all three series. Last year was my first time to race at Richmond. I learned the track pretty quick. We had some tire trouble during the race so I didn’t get to run many competitive laps, but I look forward to going back. I won’t have to concentrate on learning the track, just getting my truck fast. I enjoy racing at Richmond because it provides you with lots of racing room. You can really get up beside someone and race the door-to-door into the corner. You don’t have to beat on them to get around them like we did at Bristol. Richmond is still a short track, but it gives the driver back some of the control Bristol takes away.”

Testing in Richmond: “The day after Bristol we all made the journey to Richmond for a long day of testing. It was a good quality test. I logged tons of laps on the track. Seat time is so crucial and I really took advantage of the opportunity to spend a lot of time on the track. My guys threw several different setups underneath our truck. I am not sure we learned exactly what to do, but we learned what not to do. It takes a perfect balance between the truck and the driver to have success and that is what we were looking for. Bobby (Hamilton) was there and he helped us out where we needed it. I look forward to going back and applying what we figured out at the test.”

Making Every Lap Count: “This week I was thinking about the final eight races. It is so easy to get burned out in this business when things are not going your way. I was thinking about the goals we set at the beginning of the season and what my goals were for the final stretch. I think my team has done everything to accomplish the goals we set before Daytona, but luck has not been on our side too much. The final eight races I really want to see the team strive for three things. I want us to strive to finish each race in the top five or top 10. It would be great to walk away from Richmond with a top 10 finish. To make that happen we have to finish on the lead lap. Finally, I would like to improve my qualifying efforts. I am not the best qualifier and I want to really step it up. If you qualify up front you have a better chance of not going a lap down which leads to strong finishes. It is important just to keep making strides in the right direction. I think we are doing that and I want everyone else to see the hard work my guys put in every week.”

Notes:
• The Cheerios Betty Crocker 200 will be Montgomery’s 44th NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series start.
• He is piloting Butthead at Richmond International Raceway. This particular chassis has raced seven times this season with its highest finish (20th) coming at Kansas Speedway.
• The Tennessee native will be making his second NCTS career start at RIR Thursday night. He competed in last year’s event and finished 27th due to tire complications.
• Crew Chief Kip McCord has won several NASCAR Busch Races at RIR, including BHR teammate and owner Bobby Hamilton’s only NBS win.
• Last week, Montgomery and the No. 18 Dodge Racing team tested at RIR.

Event:             Cheerios Betty Crocker 200 (200 Laps)
Location:        Richmond International Raceway
Qualifying:      September 8th  5:00 PM EDT
Race Start:     September 8th  8:00 PM EDT Live on Speed

Crew Chief Kip McCord on Richmond: “Richmond is a unique track because it is a short track with a tri-oval. The surface is very smooth and it has lots of grip. Once the race starts I look to see the outside groove open up and be just as fast as the inside groove. Richmond provides the fans with lots of side-by-side racing. Track position will be important. There is not a track we go to anymore that track position is not important. The competition level has gotten so tough. I really think qualifying strong will make for a good finish. I think we will unload fast and hopefully we can carry that over to qualifying and the race. All of BHR tested in Richmond after Bristol. I am not sure we learned a lot about what to do, but we learned what not to do when we come back. I have had some past success here so I am looking forward to a solid performance out of this team.”
