Kansas Preview:  “Kansas Speedway is a cookie cutter track meaning it resembles other tracks we compete on. It has a lot of grip because it is a newer track. The grip makes for a fast track. It is a one-groove track, but passing the guy in front of you is not too hard. You want to stay on the bottom because it is the fastest way around the track. I am looking forward to racing at Kansas because I finished 13th there last season. I know I will have a competitive truck and lots of horsepower. ”

Favorite Tracks:  “I think it is easier for a driver to pick his least favorite track verses his favorite track. It seems to be a pretty popular question because I get asked it a lot in interviews. Usually, it is the track I have most recently run the best at so for me it would be Charlotte. But if I had to pick I would say Texas and Bristol. I enjoy Texas because it is a fast race track and we run wide open there. I had a bad wreck there a couple of weeks ago and it was not my favorite track that night, but I am over that now. Bristol is just an awesome place to race. The atmosphere is incredible. It is like racing in a big bowl. The fans are ecstatic there. Most of all I enjoy short track racing. It reminds me of what the sport was built on. You don’t see them building Bristol’s anymore. I have had success at Charlotte and Kentucky so they are not far behind the other two.”

Tech Talk with Kip McCord: “You may have heard the TV commentators talk about tear offs during a race. A tear-off is a piece of window film the crew puts on the windshield so the driver can have a clean view after each pit stop. We put them on at the shop before we leave for a race. The film comes in a roll and we cut it to fit the windshield. It is a lot like putting on wallpaper. You must start with a clean environment and surface. You lay the film on the windshield and it is secured with a water substance. The most important thing is to get all the air and water bubbles out of the film. Bubbles can obstruct the drivers view on the track. We layer the tear-offs so that we have three or four for the weekend. Each layer is smaller than the previous one. We normally take one off after practice and then one after each pit stop. A track like Darlington has lots of tire debris so we would put on up to eight tear-offs because there is so much dirt that can get on the windshield. I tape the corner of the tear-off with fluorescent tape so the jack man can see the corner during a pit stop. He pulls the taped corner and the tear-offs come off. The tear-offs are very dirty after a race run. If the driver cannot see out the windshield it can hinder his driving and result in a disappointing finish. ”
