Bobby Hamilton Square D Preview - UAW/GM Ohio 250
05-11-2004 | Mansfield, OH

Event:  UAW/GM Ohio 250
Location: Mansfield Motorsports Park
Qualifying:     May 15th 3:00 PM EDT
Race Start: May 16th 2:00 PM EDT Live on Speed

Three Trucks Ahead: “I’m usually watching the three trucks in front of me contemplating my pass.  I watch where their weak spots are as the go around the race track and make a mental note to myself that I need to pass them in that particular spot.  I’m sure other drivers have their own technique or use one that is similar to mine to pass me as well.  I have just found over the years, it is easier to contemplate a move three trucks ahead.  Then if all goes as planned I will pass one truck at a time in the spots I have mapped out.  I am quiet on the radio every race.  I prefer to be that way, but if I could say what I am thinking during a race, I would be able tell every place I’m going to try to pass.  It’s a mind game and is smooth sailing if it all works according to plan.  We all know that doesn’t happen every time though.”

Bad Luck Won’t get us Down: “Danny (Rollins, Crew Chief) and I sat down with the team after Martinsville and had a talk about how we can’t get down after one bad race with circumstances being out of our control.  The season is hard at the beginning because the races are so spread out.  If one thing happens to a truck, whether it is in the team’s control or not, then it can kill the momentum for the next race.  Our guys were very pumped up after Atlanta, so we went over some things that are going to keep us a high caliber team.  We discussed ways to reduce time when changing something during practice and we went over everyone’s role in getting the truck out in a timely manner.  It takes a team to win a championship.  This year our team fits together well, so they can do it.  We just need to keep momentum going strong."

New Venues Important to Craftsman Truck Series:  “It is very important for the Craftsman Truck Series to reach new markets.  I think we’ve seen this year that we have some of the best racing that is out there right now.  The more we can go to places that haven’t been exposed to our series, the more fans we will reach.  It’s a no-brainer that once people watch us, they will watch again.  It’s critical for Craftsman, Speed Channel, team sponsors, manufacturers and NASCAR for us to keep reaching these new markets.  It’s the first time NASCAR has been to the state of Ohio and it is already a sold out venue.  I have no doubt that we will put on a good show for the fans there so they will continue to watch this season and be back in the stands next year.”

Notes:

  • The truck Bobby is racing in Mansfield is Slim Shady.  It is the same truck Hamilton raced in Martinsville (the name has changed).

Short-track Racing:  “We tested in Pikes Peak on our short-track setups a couple of weeks ago.  We were very fast when compared with the other Dodge teams, although that is only feedback from our camp.  The test session will help us with the new venue, but it’s hard to predict what it will be like since we’ve never even seen the track before.  I called some local people and they told us how the track is and we got some feedback from people who tested there.  Then we looked at the track configuration and predicted what track we think it will compare to.  The good thing about that is every driver is on the same playing field there.  You have to go into new venues with an open mind about how you are going to drive it and pick the fastest line.”

Busy Lately?  “I have had my hands full lately.  It seems like everything I have dipped into for the 2004 season, is all coming to a head right now.  My shop is finally finished and we are talking about when we can move everything into that.  It is a lot better than I ever dreamed it would be.  I’ve finally got a show room and this huge facility our teams can be proud of.  It is the little things that have made building the new BHR shop really cool to me.  The NASCAR diversity program has kept us busy as well.  When I am not testing somewhere, we have that car on the track trying to get Joe (Henderson) some lap times.  He’s been doing a great job for us so far and I see a lot of potential in him when he gets more laps under his belt.  I’m really keeping a tight ship at the shop.  Everyone seems to be on target, but the slightest slip up can cost several people a lot of time.  So I am trying to minimize that by keeping my hands on things.  It never hurts.  I’m not really sure how the people around me feel about it, but then again I am the boss….right?”
