Short Tracks vs. Speedways: When the season started, many outsiders and
several members of the No. 18 BHR Dickies Dodge Team felt like the short
tracks would be where Chad Chaffin and the team would shine. In reality,
it has been just the opposite. The Team's short track program has had a
few setbacks, and the speedway program has been one of the best parts of
the season.
"It's hard to say anything about the season and how it has unfolded on the
short tracks," said Chaffin. "I felt like I would be good at Richmond and
IRP, but those were some of our biggest disappointments. Then when we got
to Kansas and Michigan, we won the pole and finished in the top five. It's
just been a funny year like that."
Chaffin enters the South Boston Speedway after two, sub-par finishes at
California and Las Vegas. When it comes to South Boston Speedway this
week, Chaffin hopes his experience in a Busch Series car helps him out.
Nine years ago, Chaffin recorded a 22nd place finish at the half-mile
facility.
"It seems like that was just yesterday," said Chaffin. "It's hard to
believe that was almost ten years ago. I'm sure the place has not changed
that much. It will still be a great show for the fans and a fun place to
race, so I'm looking forward to the weekend and the race."
Despite the poor performance in Las Vegas, Chaffin stayed in the tenth
position in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points standings. He did,
however, lose ground to the ninth place team. Chaffin is now 69 points
behind Terry Cook and only 23 points ahead of Matt Crafton.
Tied for Fifth All-Time at BHR: When Chaffin takes the green flag at South
Boston Speedway this Saturday, he will move into a tie with Robert
Pressley for fifth place in all-time starts (22 starts) at BHR. Next week
at Texas Motor Speedway, Chaffin will move into a tie for fourth place
with Willy T. Ribbs.

Bobby Hamilton 44

This Week's Truck: Chaffin will be racing "Chunky" at South Boston
Speedway this weekend. Chunky has had some good and bad moments this year.
It has run up front on several occasions this season, only to have a
problem at the end.

Chaffin Quotes
"The trip out west was not the best for us. We just did not have a solid
showing. In California, we just missed the set up. Then in Las Vegas, we
had a truck to beat, and the engine laid down on us just after the start.
I just don't know what to think. It's been a tough year of bad breaks and
poor racing luck. We've got five more races left this season to get it
turned around, and I know the guys are going to give it their all."
"We need a solid top five run at South Boston to keep ourselves in the
hunt for the championship mathematically. We know we're pretty much out of
the hunt, but we would like to be able to say that we lasted to four races
to go in the season. It's a morale thing for the team."
