Richmond the Site of Chad Chaffin's Career Best BGN Finish: Chad
Chaffin has never raced a truck at Richmond International Speedway, but
that doesn't mean he is without experience at the facility. In 1999,
Chaffin scored his career-best finish to date in the NASCAR Busch Series,
ninth place, in the September event.
"I had a good run in a Busch car a few years ago at the place, so I'm
hoping to do the same with a truck," said Chaffin. "It's a great track
that is fun to drive. You can lean on somebody if you need to or it has
enough room that you can run two wide sometimes. I'm sure the fans are in
for another great show from the Truck Series guys."
Chaffin and the No. 18 Dickies Dodge Team are coming off two top ten
finishes, following the sixth place finish at Nashville and a seventh
place finish at Bristol.
Points Racing: Chaffin and the No. 18 Dickies Dodge Team enter this
week's race in Richmond, Virginia just 64 points out of tenth place in the
NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points standings. With nine races to go in
the 2003 season, each race is becoming more and more important in the
quest to reach the top ten in the standings.
"We're trying not to focus too much on the points, but each person on this
team knows we need to be at our best if we are going to get in the top
ten," said Chaffin. "For the guys it means a little more money at the
season's end, and for me it means I get to go to the banquet in Miami at
the end of the season. So it's pretty important to us to gain points on
the guys in front of us over the final nine races."
Testing: Chaffin and the No. 18 Team did not take the past week off
since there was not a race in the Craftsman Truck Series, but instead,
they traveled to Atlanta Motor Speedway on August 26, to test for the
upcoming speedway races that will end the season.
"That is the best test we've ever had," said Danny Rollins, Crew Chief of
the No. 18 Dickies Dodge. "Chad was great, and the truck reacted to our
liking. I'm really excited about going to Las Vegas, California, and Texas
later this year."
This Week's Truck: Last race at Bristol, "Angel" ran so well as a
back-up truck that the team decided to bring it to Richmond International
Speedway for this week's event. Chaffin has driven Angel five times with
three top ten finishes.

Chaffin Quotes "This season has been kind of fun. The tracks
that you would think are my kind of tracks have not necessarily been the
best races for us. Then on the other hand, when we go to tracks like
Kansas Speedway, Michigan Speedway, and Texas Motor Speedway, we've run
really well. In the past; I've either not raced at them or I've run
poorly. So it's hard to say what may happen at Richmond this week. We
always go into a race weekend thinking we have a shot at the win, and at
the very least we expect to run well. But I learned a long time ago at
Nashville Fairgrounds that you never know what to expect."
"I've been just taking it easy the last week or so. We went testing, but
that's about it. The rest of the time I've been working at my business and
just going home at night. It's been a nice little break in the action, but
we're ready to get back at it this week."
"We've had two top ten finishes in a row, and we definitely want to build
on that. We need to finish out the season in the top ten in every one of
the final nine races. That should ensure that we end the season in the top
ten in the points standings."
