Lowes Motor Speedway a Good Place to Turn Season Around: Chad
Chaffin and the No. 18 BHR Dickies Dodge team enters the race this week at
Lowes Motor Speedway in Charlotte, North Carolina knowing they have to
turn their season around. Over the first four races of the season, Chaffin
and the Dickies team have had several good runs, but each time, they have
something derail their chances of a solid finish.
In Daytona and Bakersfield, the team suffered flat tires that dropped them
from contention. At the most recent event in Martinsville, Virginia,
Chaffin led the most laps and was running second with five laps to go when
his truck ran out of gas.
The one race the team had no bad luck was when Chaffin recorded a season
high fifth place finish at Darlington.
"We're posed for a solid run," said Chaffin. "In the first four races,
we've had as much go wrong as some teams have in a year, and it's just bad
luck. In a way, it gets you a little upset at the finishes, but we know
how well we have run this year, and the boys on this team and I know we're
going to get this bad string of luck behind us. The good thing is that
despite what has happened, no one is pointing fingers at each other. If
anything, we're all pulling together to get out of the hole we've dug in
the points race."
Chaffin and the No. 18 team enter the race at Lowes Motor Speedway in the
13th position in the points standings. The deceiving thing about the
points race is that from first place to 13th place, there is exactly 200
points separating these positions.
"There are a lot of races left in the season," said Chaffin. "We've got
time to move back into the points race, so we're not that worried about it
right now."
Testing: Over the last month break in the racing action for the
Truck Series, Chaffin and the No. 18 team have been testing at several
locations. On April, 24-25, 2003, Chaffin and the Dickies team were at
Kentucky Speedway for the Dodge test, along with participating in last
week's test at Lowes Motor Speedway.
"We had a good test both last week and the week before that," said
Chaffin. "I think we'll be in good shape for the race this week."
Earnings: After Chaffin's finish at Martinsville Speedway, he
surpassed the $ 100,000 in career NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series earnings.
Appearances: Chaffin and the No. 18 Dickies transporter with be at
the Sears store at the Carolina Mall in Concord, North Carolina on May 14,
2003 from 4-7:00 PM Eastern time. Chaffin will be on hand to sign
autographs.

Chaffin Quotes
"Stats can be very deceiving in some cases. That's how I would describe my
record at Charlotte. I think the record books say I've run one race at the
facility, but in reality, I have put a substantial amount of miles on the
Speedway in testing. I've raced an ARCA race at the track in 1999, and I
think I finished in the 11th position. So if people are overlooking us as
a team, that might be a factor at this race, they may be surprised. We'll
just see where we end up in the test. That should give us a pretty good
idea of where we're at, relative to everyone else at the track."
"I look for this team to have another great run at Charlotte like we had
at Martinsville. Only this time, we should not have the fuel problem we
had in the latter. Every week, this team gets a little closer together,
and this could be our break out race. I feel like we should have a great
truck just like we've had all year. Only now is the time to start knocking
down those top five finishes."
